A visit to Yunnan Province has been on my bucket list of places to visit in China, and when the opportunity came, I couldn’t pass it. Much of my time was spent with local Muslim families who made my time worthwhile and a forever memorable experience.
Here are some must-visit places in Yunnan that’ll make you fall in love with traveling in China.
About Yunnan Province
Yunnan is a province located in southwestern China, bordering Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. It has an area of approximately 394,000 square kilometers and a population of over 48 million people, with the majority of the population being ethnic Han Chinese.
Yunnan is known for its diverse geography, ranging from snow-capped mountains to tropical rainforests. It is also known for its rich cultural heritage and ethnic diversity, with 25 different ethnic minority groups living in the province.
The capital of Yunnan is Kunming, which is the largest city in the province. Other major cities in Yunnan include Dali, Lijiang, and Xishuangbanna.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Yunnan, China depends on your travel preferences and itinerary. Generally, Yunnan has a mild and pleasant climate all year round due to its high elevation and subtropical location. However, there are some variations in temperature and rainfall depending on the season and location.
The peak tourist season in Yunnan is from March to October when the weather is generally dry and comfortable. The spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit for mild temperatures, clear skies, and beautiful scenery. During these seasons, you can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and sightseeing without worrying about extreme heat or cold.
The summer (June to August) is the rainy season in Yunnan, especially in the southern regions. Although it can be wet and humid, the summer is a great time to visit Yunnan if you want to see the lush green landscapes and vibrant wildflowers.
The winter (December to February) is the low season in Yunnan due to the colder temperatures and occasional snow in some areas. However, it can also be a beautiful time to visit Yunnan if you want to see snow-capped mountains, hot springs, and festive celebrations such as Chinese New Year.
Major cities in Yunnan
- Kunming: The capital city of Yunnan and the largest city in the province. Kunming is known for its pleasant climate, colorful flowers, and diverse cuisine. It is also a transportation hub and a gateway to other popular destinations in Yunnan.
- Dali: Dali is a historic city located in the northwest of Yunnan. It is known for its well-preserved old town, scenic mountain views, and traditional Bai culture. Dali is a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and exploring ancient temples and pagodas.
- Lijiang: Lijiang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the northwest of Yunnan. It is famous for its ancient architecture, canals, and stunning mountain scenery. Lijiang is home to the Naxi ethnic minority group, and visitors can experience their unique culture and traditions.
- Xishuangbanna: Xishuangbanna is a tropical region located southwest of Yunnan, bordering Laos and Myanmar. It is known for its rich biodiversity, ethnic Dai culture, and tropical rainforests. Xishuangbanna is a popular destination for eco-tourism, adventure activities, and exploring traditional villages.
- Baoshan: Baoshan is a city located in the northwest of Yunnan, bordering Myanmar. It is known for its diverse ethnic groups, including the Lisu, Nu, and Jingpo. Baoshan is home to several natural attractions, such as the Nu River and Gaoligong Mountain, and is a gateway to the Tea Horse Road, an ancient trading route.

Here are some of the memorable attractions and destinations I highly enjoyed during my visit to Yunnan Province.
Dali City
Dali City is a historic and cultural city located in the western part of Yunnan province, China. It is located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain and adjacent to Erhai Lake, making it a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the natural scenery and cultural experiences.
Dali City has a long history and was the capital of the ancient Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms. As a result, it is home to many historical and cultural sites, including the Three Pagodas, the Dali Ancient City, and the Zhoucheng Village, which is famous for its traditional tie-dyeing techniques.
Erhai Lake
Erhai Lake is a beautiful highland lake located near Dali City. It is the second-largest lake in Yunnan and is known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery. The lake is home to many different species of fish and birds, making it a popular destination for fishing and birdwatching enthusiasts. Visitors can rent boats or take guided tours to explore the lake and its surroundings.
Weishan Old Town
Weishan Old Town is a historic and cultural town located in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan province, China. It is located approximately 50 kilometers south of Dali Old Town and is considered one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Yunnan.
Weishan Old Town has a long history, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), and was an important stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road. The town was once an important center for religion, culture, and commerce and is home to many well-preserved ancient buildings, temples, and ancestral halls.
Stone Forest
The Stone Forest is a natural wonder located in the Shilin Yi Autonomous County in Yunnan province. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most unique and stunning landscapes in the world.
The Stone Forest is a vast area of limestone formations that have been shaped over millions of years by water erosion and geological movements. The formations resemble a forest made of stone, with towering peaks, deep canyons, and intricate patterns carved into the rocks. The formations range in size from small, delicate spires to large, imposing pillars, some of which are over 30 meters tall.
When visiting the Stone Forest, you can explore the area on foot, following the well-marked paths and admiring the unique and intricate shapes of the rocks. There are also several viewpoints that offer stunning panoramic views of the landscape.
